Mandela Washington Fellowship Supporting young Africans through leadership development and building civic engagement

The Mandela Washington Fellowship, the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), empowers young African leaders age 25 through 35 through academic coursework, leadership training, mentoring, networking, professional opportunities, and local community engagement.

At the University of Georgia, the Mandela Washington Fellowship is delivered through a collaborative effort between the J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development, the UGA Office of Global Engagement, and the African Studies Institute at Franklin College.

Fellowship participants explore their own personal leadership styles and traits and learn to incorporate those skills into effective collaboration, develop comparative leadership skills and understanding and receive an introduction to the principals of strategic planning. In addition, the fellows spend time with mentors, working independently and engaging with nonprofits in the Athens-Clarke County community through discussions and volunteer opportunities.
