The Licensing Unit of the Boston Police Department receives many inquiries from the public regarding the procedures to obtain firearm licenses. Because of the serious safety concerns inherent in the possession firearms, it is recommended that the decision to obtain these licenses be considered carefully. All applicants must receive firearm safety training. Licensees should become familiar with all laws and regulations relating to firearm ownership.

A Firearm Identification card (FID) and License To Carry Firearms (LTC) is available to residents and business owners in the City of Boston. Chemical Propellant – Mace

MGL Ch.140 Sec. 122C requires a person under the age of 18 to obtain a FID card to possess chemical propellants; also know as mace or self defense spray. An FID – chemical propellant is not available for issuance to applicants over 17 years of age. The Boston Police Department does not advocate for or against citizens carrying self defense sprays.
